About l’Arc de Triomphe
Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte as a tribute to French military victory, the Arc de Triomphe stands at Place Charles de Gaulle in Paris. Construction began in 1806 and was completed in 1836. In 1921, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was added beneath its vault as a symbol of national mourning and remembrance.
Top highlights for your visit

The panoramic terrace
After climbing 284 steps, you’ll find a 360-degree rooftop view, framed by the full length of the Champs-Élysées on one side and the Eiffel Tower on the other.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Installed beneath the main arch in 1921, this memorial honors the unidentified French soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. An eternal flame has been rekindled here every evening at 6:30 pm since 1923.

La Marseillaise
Carved into the pillar on the right when facing the Champs-Élysées, this monumental high-relief sculpture by François Rude depicts the volunteers who defended France in 1792, urged on by the winged spirit of Liberty. It is considered one of the most significant works of public art in France.

The museum room
Tucked inside the arch, this exhibition traces the architectural and political history of the monument, from Napoleon’s original commission in 1806 through its completion three decades later under King Louis-Philippe.
Arc de Triomphe FAQs
How much time should I plan for my visit?
Plan on spending about 45 minutes to an hour here. That will give you time to climb the stairs at your own pace, explore the museum exhibits, and take in the 360-degree views from the terrace without feeling rushed.
What is the safest way to cross and reach the arch?
Skip the traffic circle entirely. There’s an underground pedestrian tunnel called the Passage du Souvenir that will take you safely to the monument. You’ll find entrances to the tunnel at the top of the Champs-Élysées and along the Avenue de la Grande-Armée.
Do I have to climb the stairs, or is there an elevator?
Most visitors reach the top by climbing the 284-step spiral staircase, so comfortable shoes are a smart choice. If you have reduced mobility, there is an elevator available from the forecourt to the museum level. You’ll need to be accompanied by a staff member to use it.
When is the best time of day for photography?
For the most beautiful light, aim to visit during the golden hour just before sunset, or come in the evening to see the city lights. If you’d prefer a quieter experience with more room to breathe, arriving right at the 10:00 AM opening is a lovely way to start your day.
Are there any restrictions on what I can bring inside?
Packing light will make getting through security much easier. Large bags and luggage are not allowed inside—the maximum permitted bag size is 40 x 40 x 20 cm. Pushchairs or strollers aren’t permitted inside the structure, but you can leave them with the access control officers at the entrance before heading in.
What time does the eternal flame ceremony take place?
Every evening at 6:30 PM, you can watch the ceremony to rekindle the Flame of Remembrance at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It’s a quiet, meaningful moment and a moving way to connect with the history of the monument.
Can I visit the Arc de Triomphe for free?
Quite a few visitors can explore for free. Admission is complimentary for anyone under 18, European Union residents between the ages of 18 and 25, and visitors with disabilities along with their companions. Everyone is also welcome to visit for free on the first Sunday of January, February, March, November, and December.
What happens if the weather is bad?
The Arc de Triomphe is open year-round, but it can close temporarily due to severe weather or official state ceremonies. If you’ve already purchased an e-ticket and the monument closes on the day of your visit, your ticket will be automatically refunded.
