september 2025We took a guided walk through the work of Marcos Anziani—Dominican-born, Bronx-raised—and got a real feel for how he mixes lyrical abstraction with expressionism. He moves in and out of figures and pure gesture, using big, confident marks to talk about memory, identity, and change.
Standouts for me were Caoba, El Mercado, Potter and Clay, and Reincarnated—each touched on resilience, communication, and starting over in its own way. The prints Trilingüe and In Another Life kicked off a great conversation about living in multiple languages and identities, while Memories grounded all that abstraction in the closeness of family life.
We wrapped with an open discussion, trading thoughts on how Anziani balances chaos and order, how he “speaks” through abstraction, and how personal stories in his work end up feeling universal. It was a warm, lively tour that made the paintings feel both big in scope and close to home.
