Batu Pahat Well is well-known for its connection with town’s name – Batu Pahat. The well is said to be dug in search of drinking water by the Siamese soldiers through the chiselling of stones when they were fleeing from the Malaccan troops in the 15th century. The town was then named after the chiselled rock - which is ‘Batu Pahat’ in Malay. The legendary well is just a stone’s throw away from the Minyak Beku beach, one of the popular tourist destinations in Batu Pahat. The story of the adoption of the town’s name is inscribed in a plague that is placed next to the well after it was endorsed by the Tourism Ministry as a historical tourist attraction.
