Traditional Cape Cod seafood with great local decor (wood all around, fishing gear) and you can even eat at a real caboose in the back! This is where I take my mother for the best lobster roll on the Upper Cape! Uncle Bill's Country Store attached to the lounge has wonderful gifts, antiques, odd stuff, and cards. Worth a look even if you don't buy! About 20 minutes drive from here.

Outstanding, authentic Mexican food! Best on the Cape. Very casual, small, family restaurant. A bit tricky to find because it's in a little alley, not right on Main Street. Hyannis.

Deep fried seafood, reasonably priced, by the Cape Cod Canal, near the Canal Power Station. Last time I was there the food wasn't as good as the sister restaurant in Falmouth, but the location is more interesting.

Outstanding exhibit on glass items made at the Sandwich Glass Factory, which no longer exists. The museum also has a glass-blowing demonstration, historical video and audio reenactments, and glass items for sale at the gift shop. Very inexpensive and fascinating.

Parks & Nature

Park three minutes south of me at the Sanuit Pond Preserve lot, just beyond the Shell gas station on Route 130, and walk into a system of trails in mixed woods. You can watch the herring run at the south end of Santuit Pond from about mid-April to end of May.

Nice trails and a place to launch your canoe or kayak into the marsh. Check the tide tables to catch the incoming tide if you're headed inland, and vice versa. Don't get lost. The creek branches many times.

A nice little bird sanctuary with a house for nesting barn swallows and plenty of bird boxes for tree swallows and eastern bluebirds. A huge variety of planted hollies and other landscape trees, and a pond with a trail around it. Besides the nesting birds, my favorite attraction is the rare Franklinia tree, native to the southern US but now extinct in the wild. In August it has large white and yellow, camillia-like flowers that attract bumblebees.

Free! Nice look at native sea creatures found around the Cape. Don't miss the feeding and informative training session with the handicapped but lively harbor seals in the outdoor tank, usually at 11:00 am and 4:00 pm. In summer, tough to find parking in Woods Hole.

Everything Else

Large lovely gardens, classic car museum, a working indoor carousel, and a beautiful old building for changing displays of all types. It also houses the wonderful collection of Elmer Crowell's painted bird carvings. There's a cafe for simple food. For the adventurous, there is a zipline course in the trees just outside the garden.

History

Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum, Chatham. https://www.capecodmuseumtrail.com/museum-directory/chatham-marconi-rca-wireless-museum/ A little treasure of history and communication technology! This museum tells the story of Marconi, whose company built the station, and how the station's Morse code operators were able to communicate with ships across the world even a hundred years ago. And it tells the story of the secret role that the station played during WWII. You will also have a chance to practice Morse code and find out which is faster, Morse code or texting ! In 1914, Guglielmo Marconi built a trans-Atlantic wireless station in Massachusetts. The receivers were here in Chatham and the transmitters were forty miles west, in Marion. The station was paired with a station in Norway to provide wireless communication between the two continents, using Morse code. Before operations could begin, the plan was interrupted by World War I. After the war, the station was bought by RCA and, except during World War II, stayed in operation as a wireless maritime station for over seventy years. During World War II, this was the site of the Navy’s top-secret “Station C”, which had the vital role of intercepting German U-Boats’ encrypted signals. The museum’s exhibits feature the story of Marconi whose company built the station, how RCA’s Chatham Radio (call sign WCC) became the largest ship-to-shore station in the United States, the story of the secret role that the station played during WWII, and how your cell phone came to be. You will also have a chance to encrypt your own Enigma messages, and try your hand at a drone flight simulator!
