$$$ This Gulch steakhouse from M Street restaurant group is the standard in Nashville. Now sitting at just over 13,000-square-feet after a major expansion last year which added several new bars, additional private dining space, and more, the seven-year-old restaurant feels new again. Don't skip out on longtime favorites such as the bacon with maple cotton candy and the cream corn brulée.

Previously housed in a re-purposed storage container with seating for 45, this Gulch standout from executive chef Matt Bolus upgraded to a much larger space late last year, and doesn't seem to have missed a beat. The menu has also expanded a bit, with a selection of salads and larger format dishes. And if you're looking for a drink, head to Gertie's Bar downstairs, dedicated to unique cocktails and the largest whiskey selection in the city.

With a clear separation between the bar and restaurant, chef Josh Habiger's 24-seat dining room in Wedgewood-Houston is where Bastion truly shines, showcasing his unique style of cooking. Guests have a choice between a family-style meal or the a la carte menu, with the latter laying claim to the real standouts.

One of the biggest restaurant openings of 2017, this Germantown restaurant and bar, which teams executive chef Julia Sullivan and GM/sommelier Allie Poindexter with Strategic Hospitality, puts the emphasis on seafood and seasonal vegetables, along with a raw bar program that has quickly become the best in town. Couple that with an approachable wine list, solid cocktail program and a great space, and it's a certified hit. Located in Germantown.

Having garnered near universal praise since opening in 2007, this Germantown staple continues to draw crowds for chef/owner Tandy Wilson's rustic, Southern take on Italian fare. And after years of making the short list, Wilson became the first Nashville chef to bring home a James Beard Award in 2016. $$$

Splashes of modern art add contemporary flair to the renovated Victorian house that houses this fine-dining restaurant. Whereas Husk's original Charleston outpost was "from the sea," the Nashville location is inspired by ingredients "from the dirt." Expect vegetable-heavy dishes that change daily. And don't worry, many a meat-eater have cited "A Plate of Southern Vegetable" as their favorite thing on the menu. $$$

Pinewood is a hipster-cool hangout for those at work and at play. Young entrepreneurs tap away on their laptops in the Living Room, while restaurant patrons come for Southern comfort food and craft cocktails, followed by karaoke and bowling at the six-lane alley. Although it's more than four years old, Pinewood is still very much a place to see and be seen. (Expect plaid-clad millennials on their lunch break.) By mid-afternoon, the Living Room quiets down as people race to finish the day's work—and start happy hour early (Pinewood's famous for its Easy Like Sunday Morning, a decadent Crema coffee cocktail). $$$

Award-winning pit master Pat Martin and his whole hog operation have been drawing barbecue purists down to Nolensville since 2006. But it's his downtown temple to smoked meats, a 13,000-square-foot, 500 seat restaurant, bar and backyard beer garden that opened in SoBro in 2016, that has brought Martin's Bar-B-Que squarely onto the national stage. $-$$

Arnold's Country Kitchen is basically a glorified cafeteria—albeit, one with a James Beard Award. The line often wraps around the building, but the Southern-style "meat and three" is worth the wait. Arnold's is only open for weekday lunch, so plan your visit accordingly. They have a strict no-alcohol policy, but in true Southern fashion, the sweet tea flows freely. Whether you're a born-and-bred Tennessean or a Southern food novice, a meat and three is a rite of passage—you can diet when you're back home. $

This no-frills establishment helped put hot chicken on the global list of finger-licking good food. Everyone has their own heat tolerance—unless you're a spicy-food fiend, beware the "Shut the Cluck Up." Sides are all the usual suspects: green beans, mac and cheese, French fries.
