Sightseeing

Just a 15 minute walk from the studio, treat yourself to some fresh salty air, soft golden sands, a vibrant community vibe and enjoy the many amenities on the bustling High Street & Prom. There is a wide range of shops, bars, cafes bakeries, restaurants, Italian gelato, and even an indoor swimming pool & gym directly on the wide promenade. It’s no wonder Portobello is much sought after as a place to live and visit.

A pleasant walk or short bus trip away from the property, (take the 44/113/124 or no5 bus and get off at ‘meadowbank house’ or ‘stadium’ bus stop) Arthur’s Seat & surrounding Holyrood park is a haven within easy reach of the historic Royal Mile & Holyrood Palace. Meander around the lower slopes, clamber up the steps to St. Anthony’s ruined chapel, climb to the top of the extinct volcano and admire the sweeping views over Edinburgh, the Pentlands hills national park and beyond. At the opposite side of the park from St Margaret’s Loch visit Duddingston Loch, the charming little village of Duddingston, Dr Neil’s gardens & the historic Sheepheid pub for a delicious lunch, dinner and/or drinks. The beer garden is lovely in the summer and the pub is cosy in the winter!

Fantastic views of Edinburgh’s famous city skyline. Take the 44/113/124 bus and alight at ‘St Andrews House’ stop. Pause to admire the beautiful Edinburgh old town skyline & majestic Arthur’s Seat with Holyrood Palace & the Scottish Parliament nestled at the bottom. Cross the road to head up to the top of Calton Hill and take in the iconic city view & sweeping panorama beyond. On a lovely night, facing west, enjoy the sunset.

Take the 124 bus going in the opposite direction of the city centre to the lovely little town of North Berwick in East Lothian. Climb North Berwick Law for great views down into the town, eat delicious seafood down at the Lobster shack in the harbour or at The Rockateer, stroll along the beaches, browse in the high street shops and enjoy the bracing sea air. Get closer to the marine & bird wildlife by booking one of the popular boat trips operating out of the harbour -maybe you’ll see puffins!

At the West end of Princes Street, this is a nice little diversion to the hustle & bustle of the city centre and the Dean path will take you straight to the Modern Art galleries - part of the national gallery of Scotland.

My favourite all-rounder.

The stylish St James’s Quarter is only a short bus ride away at Edinburgh’s East End of Princes Street. Take the 44/113/124 bus and get off at ‘Waterloo Place’ stop. With something for everyone, you can shop till you drop in the vast array of retail outlets, experience, amongst many, some great dining at Pho Vietnamese street food, Ka Pao and Bonnie & Wild food court. Throw some darts at Flight Club, do some bowling at Lane 7 or simply take in a movie at the iconic Everyman Cinema. If it’s cocktails 🍸 you’re after book a table in the W hotel or at The Alchemist. For sweet treats it has to be Haute Dolci or a chocvelvet milk shake at Hotel Chocolat.

Getting into town from the Garden Studio.

It couldn’t be easier. It’s a 2 minute walk from the Garden Studio to the local bus stop. Take the 44/113/124 bus and alight at either ‘Waterloo place’ bus stop to start your explorations or any of the (limited) stops along Princes Street.

Connecting to the Tram

For a visit down to the lively and unique Shore take the no5 bus from our local stop to ‘Picardy Place’ stop & connect to the tram going in the direction of Newhaven. Please remember to buy your ticket at the kiosk before you get on. Alight at the Shore’ stop for great bars & restaurants such as Nobles, Bundits of Leith, Fishers, the Ship Inn & michelin starred The Kitchin & Martin Wishart.

Figuring out the weather in Scotland
