Tetbury Town Information

One of the most stylish of all of the market towns in the Cotswolds is Tetbury, a historic wool town with a rich history dating back over 1300 years and a firm favourite amongst Royals (Prince Charles’ Highgrove Estate can be found on the outskirts of the town). Honey-coloured limestone buildings line the streets, inviting cafés and restaurants sit on every corner and there’s a thriving independent retail scene, with plenty of hidden boutiques, delicious delis and fascinating antique and interiors shops to discover. Set in the heart of the Southern Cotswolds, Tetbury’s rich heritage is evident in the historic landmarks throughout the town. Regular events are held throughout the year including Tetbury’s very own Wacky Races and the famous Woolsack Races, (both in May); one of the area’s more unusual traditions which involves participants lugging 65lb woolsacks up and down the town’s hilly streets. The Woolsack race is actually held on Gumstool Hill, so if you happen to be staying, you’ll have a VIP view from my living room. The town holds a regular Farmer’s market under the Market House on Wednesdays and Saturdays and is an antique mecca with over 25 antique shops. It’s also a hub of independent retailers including the Highgrove Shop, Domestic Science (which hosts Cafe 53 inside… our top recommendation for best coffee in town), Veloton for bike enthusiasts, Vinotopia for picking up that special bottle of wine, French Grey for interiors and gifts and Treacle George for that special home accessory, to mention a few. There are lots of gorgeous country walks that start in Tetbury and take you out into the surrounding areas. You can access the Tetbury Trail for walking or cycling from the Goods Shed Art Centre which is right opposite our apartment, The Retreat. Just a short trip outside Tetbury, there are some of the fantastic attractions on offer. Of particular note is the National Arboretum at Westonbirt, a nature-lovers paradise boasting around 18,000 spectacular trees and shrubs, as well as Beaufort Polo club; a must-visit for equine enthusiasts and those in search of a quintessential Cotswolds day out at the polo.
