Food scene

Amazing sourdough bread and pastries baked according to French tradition and recipes. The name is inspired by a previous bakery owned by one of Chocolatine’s bakers in Paris. Everything is good but the speciality chocolatine pastry and the chocolatine almond croissant deserve a special mention.

Legendary east London coffee roasters. We’re lucky to have their coffee stand/kiosk relatively close, right next to the Walthamstow Central station. They sell freshly roasted coffee which can be ground to accommodate the equipment you have. We’ve left a filter and AeroPress should you like to sample it.

Quaint and cute part of Walthamstow, hear of the Walthamstow Village. Several decent options here for brunch/lunch/dinner, including Orford Saloon tapas, Orford Fish & Chips, The Kitchen and the Eat 17 restaurant the latter of which is attached to an excellent albeit fairly pricey Spar. There's a lovely cheese shop, Froth & Rind too that does great cheese toasties. If you have time, you may wish to consider passing by the Vestry House Museum, which focuses on the Victorian era heritage of the local area. Lovely Tudor houses can be spotted nearby.

Given that one of the hosts is a proud Lithuanian, we couldn’t get away without mentioning Lituanica, a Lithuanian store serving better-than-decent Lithuanian hot food. It’s a bit of a walk but delivery is available. Cepelinai and balandeliai have been trialled extensively and are both excellent, though be warned you will likely need a digestive nap afterwards.

One of London's original pie and mash shops dating back to the 1920s. In 2013, it was awarded a Grade II listing, with English Heritage inspectors praising its "exceptionally complete interior". Manze's shop has served up traditional pies with liquor (parsley sauce) and jellied eels (for the brave) ever since its opening.

Neighbourhoods

The area around Walthamstow Central Station is home to Walthamstow Market, one of 'best kept secrets' in London. It's the longest outdoor street market in Europe. With more than 350 stalls, the market has a traditional cockney feel with influences from the diverse cultures of the area. Tuesday-Saturday you'll find seriously good value fruit and veg. Doubles as a much more expensive but nicer/more diverse Farmers’ Market on Sundays. Around the corner from the main high street, Cleveland Park Avenue features three-storey Victorian townhouses.

Sightseeing

Psychedelic paradise of neon lights and vintage signs, all hidden inside an unassuming warehouse just across the street from us. Late owner Chris Bracey, the ‘Neon Man’, got his start by making signs for Soho’s strip clubs and brothels. Soon, his talents were spotted by Hollywood, and he began fashioning props for directors such as Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton, and Christopher Nolan. Gods Own Junkyard operate their own on-site café, The Rolling Scones.

Walthamstow Wetlands is a huge Victorian reservoir of lakes and nature trails, and is free to visit. It offers over 13 miles of paths to explore across an untamed, wildlife-friendly site. It is the largest urban wetlands in Europe and is home to all kinds of interesting birdlife from waders to warblers, playing an important part in our capital’s ecological diversity. Closes at 3pm during winter months. Be sure to check out the cosy cafe in the historic and locally-listed Engine House. There are four entrances to the wetlands. The main entrance is on Ferry Lane/Forest Road, a ten-minute walk from Tottenham Hale and Blackhorse Road stations (Victoria line - you can catch it from Walthamstow Central) and served by buses 123 and 230. There is also a visitors' car park. The other entrance on the south side is at Coppermill Lane next to Walthamstow Marshes. On the north side of the Wetlands, there is an entrance opposite the car park on FerryLane/Forest Road and at Lockwood Way, off Blackhorse Lane.
