Naxos’ Temple of Apollo – Portara, a huge marble gate and the single remaining part of an unfinished temple of Apollo of 530 BC, is the island’s emblem and main landmark.
Standing on the islet of Palatia, at the entrance to Naxos harbor, it comprises four marble parts weighing about 20 tons each.

In fact, the myth says that when Theseus abandoned Ariadne on Naxos, Dionysus saw her and fell in love with the young, beautiful lady. At first, Ariadne didn't like the god and tried to hide in the intense greenery of the island, but Dionysus found her, they got married and Ariadne became a goddess.
To honor their god, the residents of Naxos built a large temple that partly survives till today in the modern position Iria, close to Glinado village and about 5 km from Chora town.

The Byzantine Museum on Naxos is housed in one of Kastro’s most imposing buildings, a four-level tower with an incredible view of the harbor, close to the northwestern gate.
The Barozzi and Crispi family coats of arms, at the tower’s main entrance and interior door, respectively, serve to remind of the monument’s past owners.
Its final owner, the P. Glezos family, donated the tower to the state, which explains why it is referred to as the Glezos tower, or Apirathitissa, derived from Apiranthos, the donor family’s hometown.
Nowadays, the tower, which has been fully restored, houses the Byzantine Museum for the entire Cycladic region. On show is a very worthwhile collection of Byzantine sculptures from Naxos and the Cyclades, dated between the 7th and 12th centuries.

Trekking in Mount Zas in Naxos, Cyclades: Mount Zas is the tallest mountain of Naxos island and also the tallest mountain of the Cyclades. Located 18 km from Naxos Town, it is strongly connected to the history and geography of the island. According to mythology, this mountain was the place were god Zeus, the chief of the Olympian Gods, grew up, haunted by his own father Kronus. In fact, the mountain was named after him (Zas). His son, god Dionysus, also grew up on the slopes on this mountain, in a cave called Cave of Zas.
