Places Dark & Magical

The old gravestones of Buckskin Cemetery dot a beautiful, steep hillside at the base of large pine and aspen trees. The last remaining vestige of the once prosperous town of Buckskin Joe, Colorado, the cemetery graves hold the remains of many miners and their families such as Thomas Fahey, the restless bones of J. Dawson Hidgepath and possible even the legendary Silverheels. History indicates that while Silverheels was performer and dancehall girl who’s real name was never known, she risked her own health and safety to nurse and care for those in her community who were in need and suffering from smallpox during a lethal outbreak in the winter of 1861. When it was discovered that she had vanished mysteriously from her home in the aftermath of the epidemic, it is believed that - at the least, she suffered from severe scarring and embarrassing disfigurement of her face when she herself became infected, while others fear that she ultimately succumbed to death from the virus herself. To this day, members of the community claim to have seen the ghost-like presence of a heavily veiled woman, dressed all in black walking through the Buckskin Cemetery, the silver heels of her old shoes tinkling on the gravel of the pathways. Pro Tip: If you can plan your visit in October, the local Historical Society offers evening ghost tours of the Cemetery featuring local lore and dark tales. An additional fun fact, the antique scythe hanging in our home was used as a prop in these tours for over 22 years!

At the top of Park Hill Road on the NW side is a parking area for a small cluster of National Forest hiking trails. FS Trail 10A is named “Hangin’ Tree Trail”. These beautiful trails feature fun, rolling forest tracks perfect for mountain biking, hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. But our favorite part of adventuring in this area are the the number of special treasures, trees and strange surprises that you may stumble upon. Tap out a tune on the Music tree, hang an ornament on the Christmas tree or leave an offering at the Bone tree when you find her. Enjoy these special places but please be aware that they should all be treated with respect and never damaged or abused as they are very sacred spaces for many in our community.

Danish Artist Thomas Dambo created this happy, little (15 foot tall! ) fellow who has become a much loved member of the Breckenridge community. Park in the free parking lot behind the Breckenridge Ice Arena, enjoy a short walk up the well marked, shady Trollstigen Trail and find Isak Heartstone sitting guard over the town. ProTip: There are little benches at the base of Isak’s perch, perfect for a little picnic. Consider packing a tasty snack or grabbing a tasty charcuterie board from The Cheese Shop of Breckenridge and enjoying a nibble while you enjoy the sculpture and people watching.
