The monastery is located in a large cave in a sheer cliff, where the western slopes of Mount Chelmos drop down to the gorge of the Vouraikos river, some 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) northwest of the town of Kalavryta.[1] The cave was known in antiquity, and the geographer Pausanias reports that the daughters of Proetus found refuge there during their madness.

Zachlorou is a village built on a mountain slope south of the Vouraikos Gorge. It is located 20 km south of Diakopto and about 12 km north of Kalavrita. Zachlorou can also be approached and seen through the journey with the Cog Railway (Odontotos). The name "Zachlorou" derives its origin from the slavian word "Zafkloro", which means "behind the mountains". Zachlorou was built during the Turkish Domination, mainly by people who came from Epiros. Main occupations of the Zachlorou's residents is farming and agriculture.
Above the village rests the Monastery of Mega Spilaio where the so-called miraculous picture of Virgin Mary, made by Luke the Evangelist, can be seen. Excellent path for trekking is the path that connects the village of Zachlorou with the Monastery of Mega Spilaio; it starts from the railway station of Zachlorou and it was primarily used as the main path long before the construction of the main road. Walking the path will approximately take 45 min.
