Food Scene

Covid has changed a lot of things around town. For instance, Latitude 33 has closed and has been replaced by a new pick-up only place. I spoke to the chef there, who told me he was formerly the head chef at Sierra Grand Lodge, whose restaurant has also closed. I still highly recommend Casa Taco and the restaurant at the Sierra Del Rio Golf Course in Elephant Butte, Tony’s Mexican restaurant, and Pacific Grill has those were the ones I was able to visit during my recent stay in cream.
They have a full bar, a rarity in this small town, and their Prime Rib Sandwich and Oysters Rockefeller are tops on my list for bar dining. For that special dinner out, I recommend the prime rib, ribeye (ask for it) and lobster. Ask for the mixed green or romaine salad unless you like iceberg, and dressing on the side. Opens at 5 pm.

Fish & chips as good as I get oceanside! Tiny bowls include trip to salad bar which has separate bowls of mixed greens and iceberg--an important distinction for me. Beer & wine at reasonable prices, too. Closed between lunch and dinner. This place is almost always busy at noon with locals; try to go at 1:15 (they close at 2).

Their food is always surprisingly good and they have a good selection of beer as well. They have recently put in an outdoor patio. They are closed on Tuesdays and either Monday or Wednesday as well you need to check with them to make sure they are open before driving out there specifically for their food.

Local Drinking Places

Excellent beer and I highly recommend trying the $10 Sampler of 6 five ounce pours. Can be shared and you can also get multiples of the same beer. You can pick up a 20 ounce can of their flagship Cosmic Blonde to go or even a Growler of the beer of your choice. Outdoor food allowed and a few restaurants will deliver to you in the brewery, once you place your order.

Mesa above the Rio Grande on the Healing Waters Trail

Located on Carrie Tingley Hill, this is a very nice walking path with informational markers sharing details of local mountains, flora and fauna, as well as a few "covered" picnic tables. Good for dog walks. If you can handle stairs, I recommend an approach from Riverside Drive past Jack E Baker Rotary Park and Wetlands where there is a parking lot and metal stairs up the cliff which lead to a switchback path to the Mesa. It's only about a 5-minute walk up to the mesa. Can also be entered from the parking lot behind the Veterans Memorial. https://bit.ly/2th2wux
