Food scene - Alameda

Nosh - early and late...highlighting the restaurants of this perfect little island.
Located in what can be called Alameda's version of a strip mall, Trabacco has never failed to excite my discerning palette for all things Italian. Go early for a stroll through the marketplace or stay late and sit a spell on Robert Crown beach and watch the sun set over glistening San Francisco.

Food scene - East Bay

Food recommendations that stretch from the Carquinez Straits Bridge all the way South to the San Mateo Bridge
Not on Alameda Island but a quick 10 minute drive across the Park Street bridge onto Oakland's Embarcadero - no freeways needed to access this historic place. Enjoying prime real estate on the Oakland estuary across from Coast Guard Island, Quinns offers waterfront dining downstairs and a more casual pub-like dining experience upstairs. Really good food in generous portions, Quinn's is a great spot to fill the tanks after a long day exploring the Bay Area.

Its hard to describe this place but 'bakery' doesnt seem like it does the place justice....it is one of the 'not to be missed' experiences when you're in Berkeley. A stop here before a picnic down by the Berkeley Marina or after a hike around Joaquin Miller Park in the Oakland Hills may be the best decision you make today. A huge selection of international cheeses and breads (bialy, brioche, batard, baguette, grackle??) locals and visitors swear by this place and I didnt really 'get it' until i walked through the doors. Technically a cooperative aligned with the Pizzaria next door, the selection of cheese and bread is almost never ending. Make haste to the Berkeley Cheese Board Bakery....this - along with experiencing the Berkeley Bowl on a Saturday Morning - are my favorite grab and go places in this great city. Heck, you don't even have to leave Berkeley....wander over to the UC campus and sit in the shadow of the Campagnile on a warm afternoon and appreiciate Berkeley for everything that is was and all the possibilities that lie ahead.

Alameda Gems

My undergraduate work was in theatre and I will ALWAYS appreciate the hard work (and fun!) the folks around the world do each to keep community theatre alive. Altarena Playhouse is a small space with big ambitious people running the front and back houses. Some really incredible local talent always on hand to take both former Broadway hits and smaller independent works to task. If you like theatre but cant make it into SF to see a professional touring company light the lights of Hamilton or raise the curtain on the master work being done at the American Conservatory Theatre - give Altarena a chance. Who knows, your next trip back to Alameda might be audition for their next show! http://www.altarena.org/

This is like taking time out of our 21st Century lives and stepping back into the time - warped 70’s and 80’s It was around then that Atari company’s Pong came roaring onto the scene that would eventually catapult us toward the Pokémon go phenomena and eventually toward Virtual and Augmented Realities and oh goodness, where will it end? No where in sight... So instead of anticipating a future of tomorrow’s, sit back and relax into an afternoon of yesterday’s...

Alameda wasn’t always just a great place to raise a family but the home of the Alameda Naval Air Station. To this end, Alameda became the final resting spot of some major naval machinery, namely, the USS Hornet. Tours by docents daily or self guided tt comers that it was this vessel that rescued the astronauts after they splashed down from the first trip to the lunar body - Moon 🌚 over Alameda.
