Once known as the Common Settlement, Dogtown is divided btwn Gloucester & Rockport. Settled in 1693 Dogtown got its name from dogs that women kept while their husbands were fighting during American Revolution. Protected from pirates and enemy natives, Dogtown was used as common land for wood & pasturing cattle/sheep. In the mid-1700s, a 100 families inhabited Dogtown after the American Revolution.
Some of its last occupants were suspected of practicing witchcraft. (Thomazine "Tammy" Younger was described as "Queen of the Witches" by Thomas Dresser) Dogtown became abandoned. Today walking through Dogtown can evoke memories of old. But beware of getting lost among its wayward trails.

Dogtown
Once known as the Common Settlement, Dogtown is divided btwn Gloucester & Rockport. Settled in 1693 Dogtown got its name from dogs that women kept while their husbands were fighting during American Revolution. Protected from pirates and enemy natives, Dogtown was used as common land for wood & pasturing cattle/sheep. In the mid-1700s, a 100 families inhabited Dogtown after the American Revolution.
Some of its last occupants were suspected of practicing witchcraft. (Thomazine "Tammy" Younger was described as "Queen of the Witches" by Thomas Dresser) Dogtown became abandoned. Today walking through Dogtown can evoke memories of old. But beware of getting lost among its wayward trails.

15 min walk - Forested trails near the house. Great place to go for a 6 - 8 mile run in the woods. I prefer to run on earth over asphalt or concrete.

10 min drive - Manchester - Beautiful quiet out-of-the-way park and beach overlooking Manchester harbor. Fun stop to check out for half hour. Very impressive mansions along the road. Easy parking.

Singing Beach has its name cuz the sand sings when you scuff your bare feet over it. Weird, right? But it's true. Manchester-by-the-Sea. If it's during the summer, you won't be able to park in the lot without a sticker. But you can take the train north 1 station and walk (15 min). On weekends before 4pm they charge walk-on fee. I never pay cuz I go after 4pm.
