It was Queen Maria Cristina who decided to convert this site into a 19th century English-style garden, influenced by the Romantic concept of nature. It had not been developed as a garden in the past, as it was not possible to connect the area to the Royal Palace, which was situated at a much higher altitude. This position was exploited to create one of the best views in Madrid, with the Royal Palace looming beyond an expansive green tapestry, surrounded by monumental fountains within an ample and shady romantic garden. The gardens also contain two Neoclassical fountains: the Fountain of the Tritons and that of the Palace of the Shells.

From the playful viewpoint of the new system on the bank of the Manzanares, it provides the perfect recipe for a good time with family. Children will have fun in the 17 play areas found along the Salón de Pinos, all with swings made from sustainable, natural materials such as wood and hemp rope, forming webs, hammocks, hanging bridges or climbing vines. With 1,722.60 hectares of natural space, this location is the most important public park in Madrid. The history of Casa de Campo began with the decision by Philip II to move the Court to Madrid, and reside there. The King built a manor house linking the Palace with the hunting area called El Pardo. Later, farms and fields bought from the areas surrounding the Casa de Campo were added. It was declared a Bosque Real (Royal Forest) under Fernando VI. As a result of the hunting and country atmosphere of the farm, as well as its proximity to the Palace, the original country house belonging to the Vargas Family was enlarged to host the Royal Family for such activities.

With a surface area of almost 100 hectares, this important green space is located between the road to A Coruña, the university campus and the area of Moncloa. The park was an initiative by the mayor of Madrid, Mr. Alberto Aguilera, in the year 1906, who requested the landscaper Cecilio Rodríguez to design a place for walking and recreation for the residents of Madrid. The space has very original places such as the cable car, the school of ceramics, the rose garden, where an international rose competition is held each year, or the Temple of Debod, near Plaza de España, an Egyptian temple from the second century B.C. which was given to Spain by the Egyptian Government.

These are Classical-style gardens created in the 1930’s on the site of the stables built by Sabatini for the Royal Palace, hence their name. Located in front of the north façade of the Royal Palace. Although they look spectacular at any time of the day, at dusk they are truly magnificent, as it is one of the best sites in Madrid from which to watch the sunset. From the large rectangular pond in the centre of the garden, surrounded by fountains, trees, and white marble sculptures, the visitor can contemplate how the yellow and red tones alter the colouring of the gray stones of the Palace, and watch the sunset from the perspective of the Casa de Campo.

Madrid’s opera house, designed by the municipal architect Antonio López Aguado during the reign of Queen Isabella II, was inaugurated in 1850 (although the first stone was laid on 23 April 1818). Located a stone's throw from Puerta del Sol, the building was one of Europe’s leading theatres for over 75 years, until it was deemed unsafe in 1925 and closed for 41 years. In 1966 it was reopened as a concert hall with the Spanish National Orchestra as its resident orchestra. In 1977 it was declared a National Monument and in 1997, after 7 years of extensive works, the Teatro Real once again became home to Madrid’s opera scene.

Building was started by Antonio Sillero and later continued by Juan Bautista de Toledo between 1559 and 1564 for the Monasterio de las Clarisas. This Monastery occupies the ancient palace of Carlos I and Isabel of Portugal. In 1535, their daughter Juana, who later founded the Convent, was born there. She herself is buried in one of the chapels, with a praying funerary sculpture by Pompeyo Leoni. Regarding its architecture, the Plateresque façade and the magnificent Renaissance stairway are the most interesting original elements. The interior was completely refurbished in the 18th century by Diego de Villanueva. The structure and many decorative elements from the Plateresque remain.

The building is the work of the architects Juan Gómez de Mora and Friar Alberto de la Madre de Dios, who constructed a building that has become an example of what has come to be known as Madrid’s Baroque style. The convent keeps important pictorial and sculpture collections from the 17th and 18th Centuries, with works done by Lucas Jordán, Juan Van der Hammen, Vicente Carducho, Gregorio Fernández, and Pedro de Mena. Philip III founded this Church at the beginning of the 17th Century. It is a unique church in Madrid due to its ellipsoidal layout, and for having been painted entirely al fresco. At the beginning of the 17th century, Philip III offered the Church and the adjacent Hospital to Portuguese pilgrims and patients who were passing through Madrid, so it was originally named San Antonio de los Portugueses. In 1640, when the Spanish crown lost Portugal, the temple ceased hosting citizens of Portugal and it remained empty until 1689, when Mariana de Austria gave it to the Catholics of Germany who were accompanying Carlos II’s wife in Madrid. Consequently, it was known as San Antonio de los Alemanes

Its name comes from Philip V of Spain's victory in the battle of Almansa on 25th April 1707, San Marcos Day. Work began on the church in 1749 under the architect Ventura Rodriguez. It was consecrated on 22nd April 1753 and in 1836 became an independent parish. It is considered one of Ventura Rodriguez's best works and he was buried in the church alongside his wife until the 19th century, when their remains were moved to what is often called "the chapel of the architects", the church of San Sebastián. The exterior (it is hemmed in by buildings on three sides) does not match the richness of the interior, with its large organ made from walnut and many decorative details.

This is an Egyptian temple dating back to the 2nd century BC, transported to Madrid’s Cuartel de la Montaña Park. The temple was donated to Spain by the Egyptian government to save it from floods following the construction of the great Aswan Dam. Works on the temple began at the beginning of the 2nd century BC at the orders of the Meroë King Adijalamani, who built a chapel dedicated to the god Amun and the goddess Isis. This chapel was decorated with high reliefs. Subsequent kings of the Ptolemaic dynasty built new rooms around the original core, thereby enlarging the temple. After Egypt was annexed by the Roman Empire, the emperors Augustus and Tiberius – and possibly Hadrian, too.

This portico lined square is situated at the heart of Hapsburg Madrid, the old part of the city and one of the capital’s most charming districts. Before Madrid became a capital city, with its wide avenues and boulevards, its footprint consisted of narrow streets, alleys and passageways, which today take us back to the times of swashbuckling swordsmen and medieval rogues. The foundations of Plaza Mayor were laid, when Philip II's court moved to Madrid, on the site of the former Plaza del Arrabal, where the town's most popular market was located towards the end of the 15th century.
