I am a bookbinder living in a small town in the South Island of New Zealand. I like to live in a 'traditional' manner, eschewing a modern existence where possible, whilst maintaining a comfortable life and a sense of humour .
My "Retreat", is just that. I offer a secluded converted, originally out house and laundry shed, which has been thoughtfully transformed into an accommodation experience, over a long period on a low budget. It is neither an hotel nor a bed and breakfast, but a self contained cabin. The Retreat is adjacent to my home, which is a little over 15 minutes walk to the historic precinct. My hosting style is hands off- At my 'real' job, that of a traditional bookbinder, I'm in full public view and interact daily with travellers- often difficult when working on demanding restoration work. More recently my partner and I have begun a nano-nana brewery, specialising in Belgian inspired bottle conditioned ales. Look up; Craftwork Brewery, Oamaru, N.Z. That makes my time at home even scarcer than before! Therefore my home is my castle, and guests are encouraged to be self sufficient and to feel at home. My guest will find however, most basic provisions to cook a simple meal at no extra cost. The eggs are from my hens, fruit or vegetables usually from the garden. When I have rye bread, which I bake myself, I place a few slices next to the eggs. I don't use any chemical sprays on the property and I'm lucky to have similar neighbours. I never get enough gardening done and it's run loosely along permaculture principles, which means it looks a mess to most folk! There is a wood stove which is very efficient and a supply of wood two yards from the door- You may have to chop it yourself though!
I'm often not at home, but if I'm expecting a guest, the gate and Retreat will be open. Once you have arrived, please read the instructions which are to be found in the visitors book and further tips elsewhere upon further instruction.
If you want the comfort of a motel, mod cons and easy access, then don't book The Bookbinder's Retreat. ( :-{ ) "OU BIEN OU RIEN"
