Located in Oamaru, this beautifully restored, cosy and warm Cabin is the perfect place to base yourself at while you explore the Otago region.

Bookbinder's Retreat is small self-contained studio, situated adjacent to the main house. Whilst in the town, the property has a rural outlook over the Public Gardens, and a secluded feel. I have enjoyed creating the space on a small budget over a long time. Travellers seem to appreciate the craftsman like quirkiness of the space which reflects the town.

Welcome To The Bookbinders's Retreat.....

Located in Oamaru, this beautifully renovated, cosy and warm Cottage is the perfect place to base yourself at while you explore the Otago region.

The Retreat is a small self-contained studio which is situated adjacent to the main house. There is a separate kitchen and bathroom along with french doors that open out onto a small garden with a fire pit.

The cottage consists of a double bed and linnen is provided for your convenience. For the colder months, an electric blanket is supplied.

The main garden is based on permaculture design, with two chickens providing fresh eggs. The atmosphere is private and quiet.

The owner is not always at home and there are no pets allowed onsite.

View over Public Gardens; Close to town (15 mins), easy walking distance. Private and quiet, lovely setting
My studio is deliberatly low tech and has a charachter suited to the town and it's environment.

Her skal du være

Oamaru, Otago, New Zealand

Oamaru is a small town- 1300 people, mostly retired farmers, manual workers, Engineering, Woollen mill, Freezing works, but increasing a service sector for tourism and a number of well known Artists and Crafts people. The South Hill, where the Retreat is located faces north so is a sunny location with a view over the Public Gardens and the sea and mountains, visible from the wooden deck. Nearby is a New World super market and a petrol station and fish and chip shop/ Chinese takeaway, 6 minutes walk.
Down the hill is the limestone built town, with a mixture of shops, still many owned by local families. Most visitors are lured here by the sight of the Little Blue Penguins, which are heavily marketed by the local council at the paid attraction, The Oamaru Little Blue Penguin Colony. The rare Yellow Eyed Penguins at Bushy Beach, 40 minutes walk from town is a natural experience. After viewing the penguins most visitors realise they have then discovered the largest collection of Nineteenth Century stone buildings in Australasia, which needs some time to explore. The Grainstore Gallery is a full reflection of artist Donna Demente's exuberant eccentric tastes- it would not be out of place in Venice. This is serendipitous as most of the buildings designed by Victorian Scottish draughtsmen are of Neo Venetian style popular in Glasgow and Edinburgh at the time. The town flourished for a short period of time then froze economically for a 100 years- hence it's rich remains now.

I am a bookbinder living in a small town in the South Island of New Zealand. I like to live in a 'traditional' manner, eschewing a modern existence where possible, whilst maintaining a comfortable life and a sense of humour . My "Retreat", is just that. I offer a secluded converted, originally out house and laundry shed, which has been thoughtfully transformed into an accommodation experience, over a long period on a low budget. It is neither an hotel nor a bed and breakfast, but a self contained cabin. The Retreat is adjacent to my home, which is a little over 15 minutes walk to the historic precinct. My hosting style is hands off- At my 'real' job, that of a traditional bookbinder, I'm in full public view and interact daily with travellers- often difficult when working on demanding restoration work. More recently my partner and I have begun a nano-nana brewery, specialising in Belgian inspired bottle conditioned ales. Look up; Craftwork Brewery, Oamaru, N.Z. That makes my time at home even scarcer than before! Therefore my home is my castle, and guests are encouraged to be self sufficient and to feel at home. My guest will find however, most basic provisions to cook a simple meal at no extra cost. The eggs are from my hens, fruit or vegetables usually from the garden. When I have rye bread, which I bake myself, I place a few slices next to the eggs. I don't use any chemical sprays on the property and I'm lucky to have similar neighbours. I never get enough gardening done and it's run loosely along permaculture principles, which means it looks a mess to most folk! There is a wood stove which is very efficient and a supply of wood two yards from the door- You may have to chop it yourself though! I'm often not at home, but if I'm expecting a guest, the gate and Retreat will be open. Once you have arrived, please read the instructions which are to be found in the visitors book and further tips elsewhere upon further instruction. If you want the comfort of a motel, mod cons and easy access, then don't book The Bookbinder's Retreat. ( :-{ ) "OU BIEN OU RIEN"
