Mheall Cottage is a traditional 1850’s estate cottage sited in beautiful farmland in the heart of the ancient Gaelic kingdom of Dalriada.

The three things my guests say they like most about staying here are: it's clean, it's quiet and the location is exceptional.

It's also my home.

The space works particularly well for 3 people i.e. a couple+one OR three friends traveling together (as you can use both beds in the Twin room) but you can still book just the Double room for 2 at the list price.

Boligen
The 'guest suite' is your private half of the cottage and really is a suite of rooms.

The price is per room so the number of bedrooms you get (and thus the final price) depends on how many people you enter on the reservation...

~ if you book for ONE or TWO people you get the main Double bedroom (1 king-size double bed), 1 en-suite bathroom with shower, the breakfast/day room and private entrance/porch

~ if you book for THREE people you automatically get the additional Twin room (2 single beds) and an extra WC/sink (the price will now update to include the extra room)

~ if you are TWO people but would like TWO SEPARATE ROOMS, i.e. a bed in the Twin room and the extra WC/sink as well as the Double room, this is certainly possible but you need to enter THREE people on the booking - odd I know, but it's the only way the pricing will display correctly (because my prices are per room not per person). That said, I will usually offer a 10% discount on this type of two-person booking.

Bedroom 1 THE DOUBLE ROOM: A light, spacious double bedroom with a fully en-suite bathroom, a great shower, a king-size bed and beautiful views towards the sea.

Bedroom 2 THE TWIN ROOM: A cosy twin bedroom with 2 single beds and its own adjacent bathroom with WC and sink.

BREAKFAST/DAY ROOM: Your own private breakfast room (a self-service breakfast is left out for you in here) equipped with fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster; there are also shelves full of maps, books and information to help you plan your day while relaxing and enjoying your morning coffee.

PRIVATE ENTRANCE/PORCH SPACE: your own private front-door access plus a porch space to hang coats and leave walking boots etc

PARKING: Ample off-street parking

If you are booking for two people, i.e. just the double room, you can skip the next paragraph as it concerns the additional twin room which only becomes available when you book for three.

If you are booking for three people this automatically opens up the extra twin room for you. Your group can use one or both the beds in this room. The twin room has its own adjacent WC and washbasin, but your group will need to organise sharing the en-suite shower which is in the main double room.

If you are looking for a comfortable and unique place to stay in the home of someone local who knows the area very well you are on the right page. The reviews of Mheall Cottage from previous guests tell all the same story - a story I hope you will add to yourself once you have visited.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to meeting you!

Andre ting, der er værd at bemærke
You will get reception for roaming internet here via the EE 4G network - it's what I use myself for all internet access in the cottage. (The reason I can't tick 'Unlimited Broadband' on my listing is because a fixed-line is no longer being maintained at my property due to slow speed and unreliability.)

A basic 'continental' breakfast will be provided for you in the breakfast room consisting of muesli, cereals, milk, orange juice, coffee, tea, bread, butter & jam etc. You are welcome to bring your own food and store it in the small mini-fridge while you are here.

There are several great local options for your evening meal - I will point you in the direction of my top suggestions (or you can check them out in my online 'Guidebook'); most places close their kitchens at around eight-thirty so plan to eat out early in Argyll. Alternatively, by all means bring your own light food and eat in by making use of the microwave in the breakfast room.

At the moment Mheall Cottage is not really properly equipped to cater for very young children, hence the 'Family/Kid Friendly' option is not ticked because the criteria covers a very wide age-range of 2-12yrs. However, if you are traveling with an older child (say 7+) I think you'll find the extra single room a perfect addition. Younger kids - well, you can always ask me!

Cyclists welcome! I am located right on National Cycle Route 78 (Campbeltown to Inverness). Mid-Argyll is a popular cycling area in itself and there are lots of good routes to explore around here. I have a lockable shed for you to store your bikes in overnight and some basic bike tools etc should you need them.

Mheall Cottage is not a guaranteed nut-free household, just in case you have this type of severe allergy.

Please understand that Mheall Cottage is surrounded by fields, farmland and livestock, carefully managed by the Poltalloch Estate in the best traditions of Scottish Highland farming; this means in the spring you might see lambs being born right next to the house, and/or sheep-dogs working the flock, but in the summer they might be being driven past your window at 7am on their way to market. It might mean you hear things that go bump in the night such as deer or foxes foraging around outside the door. A bird or a bat might get into the house through an open window. We might have a power-cut. Tractors and farm vehicles pass by from time to time. Game hunting takes place in the area. If any of these aspects of everyday country life disturb or upset you, perhaps you might be better off seeking accommodation in the town.

My super-friendly retriever dog called 'Isla' also lives on the premises. She isn't allowed in your private half of the cottage (there's a dividing door) and won't disturb you but she loves meeting new people if you're up for it!

FINAL NOTE: Air BnB requires us hosts to remind you that we can only accept reservations from the person(s) who will actually be coming to stay on the premises - we can't take 3rd-party reservations on behalf of family members/friends or companies/organisations; by extension, this means that you must have a passport-style profile photograph that fits your description. Also, as you are booking to come and stay in my home, I much appreciate hearing a couple of lines from you as to who you are and what brings you to this wonderful area of Scotland. Thanks!

Kilmartin, Argyll & Bute, Storbritannien

Mheall Cottage is situated roughly at the midway-point between the attractive and busy seaside town of Oban, the historic royal burgh of Inverary, and the ferry ports for the islands of Islay, Jura, and the Arran summer route.

But you'll want to spend as much time as you can in the area because with its rich history, castles, spectacular coastline, islands, beautiful woodlands and gardens, rugged hills and diverse wildlife, Mid-Argyll is a fascinating and spectacular part of Scotland to explore!

Here are some of my personal highlights:

From Mheall Cottage you can walk directly out of the front door through KILMARTIN GLEN - visiting TEMPLE WOOD STONE CIRCLE and the famous CHAMBERED BURIAL CAIRNS along the route, all the way up to the award-winning KILMARTIN MUSEUM, the epicentre of local historical information and where an excellent lunch/coffee awaits you in the Cafe.

Or follow the trail east through MOINE MHOR nature reserve (one of Britain's finest peat-bog habitats for all sorts of remarkable flora and fauna) and up to the top of DUNADD FORT - first built in the Iron Age and subsequently a settlement used by the Gaelic rulers of Dalriada Kingdom in the 6th to 9th Centuries. A bit further on is the prehistoric rock art at ACHNABRECK - some of the finest and largest examples of stone-carved cup and ring marks anywhere in the country.

BOAT TOURS depart from CRINAN, TAVYALLICH or ARDFERN and can take you out to the Islands and the famous CORRYVRECKAN WHIRLPOOL (Europe’s second largest whirlpool), where you may also catch a glimpse of DOLPHINS and the rare WHITE-TAILED SEA EAGLES.

Take a stroll along the beautifully maintained and historic CRINAN CANAL, visit DUNTRUNE CASTLE GARDENS, or simply relax on the glorious sands of nearby CRINAN FERRY - all of which are visible from Mheall Cottage.

KNAPDALE FOREST is traversed by many great cycling routes, and the various Hill Lochs (which can be fly-fished on a day pass) are home to the famous SCOTTISH BEAVER TRAIL as well as other interesting wildlife habitats.

Highly recommended are the local WHISKY DISTILLERIES: the nearest mainland ones being OBAN (50mins drive N.) and AUCHENTOSHAN (90mins drive S.), while to get to the famous island distilleries of ISLAY you are within easy reach of the ferry from Kennacraig port (45mins drive S.).

In addition to its beautiful BEACH, the tastefully restored 11th Century KIMORY KNAP CHAPEL houses some remarkable Celtic tomb carvings, and the views out to the islands from this peninsular are truly spectacular.

CASTLE SWEEN commands spectacular views of Loch Sween and is thought to be one of Scotland’s oldest castles (12th Century), while CARNASSERIE CASTLE stands on a hill just outside Kilmartin and is also well worth a visit.

The royal burgh of INVERERARY - seat of the Duke of Argyll - is only 45 minutes away with its impressive CASTLE and JAIL. Or pop down to the picturesque fishing village of TARBERT - home to some of Scotland's finest and freshest seafood.

In terms of amenities - the town of LOCHGILPHEAD is only 11km away, meaning useful essentials like a GARAGE, PHARMACY and SHOPS are within easy reach of Mheall Cottage.

The attractive and busy seaside town of OBAN is about 50 minutes drive away with its famous HARBOUR, RAILWAY/FERRY PIER, WHISKY DISTILLERY and SEAFOOD RESTAURANTS. Climb up and take in the breathtaking views of KERRERA and the ISLE OF MULL from McCAIG'S TOWER, or visit the historically important and spectacular castles of DUNOLLIE and nearby DUNSTAFFNAGE...
