No Stock Ranch is a comfortable two-bedroom vacation rental home on a twenty-acre Terlingua Ranch property. Originally built as a retirement home and family retreat, the owner has decided to share it as a vacation rental. Guests are invited to make No Stock Ranch their home away from home in the Big Bend region. Just thirty minutes from Big Bend National Park and the Terlingua Ghost Town.

Located on 20 secluded acres, this property provides a measure of solitude and serenity that is rare in the modern world. Relax on the porch swing while watching the stars or go for a quiet walk through the arroyo, down the ranch roads, or up the scenic hill. Sleep well in the comfortable beds. Share meals prepared in the full kitchen or charcoal grill. Take the short drive to Big Bend National park, the Rio Grande River, or the famous Terlingua Ghost Town.

The full kitchen is stocked with everything the typical family or small group will need for cooking meals or making drinks. There is also plenty of space for putting away your groceries. The kitchen is open to the living room and the dining area, allowing for time together when meals are being prepared. The living room has a large sofa, a relaxing easy chair, and barrel chair, plus a flat screen television with DirecTV.

There are two bedrooms. The master has a king-size bed plus a flat screen television with DirecTV. The guest bedroom has a queen-size bed. There are also two full bathrooms.

The rear deck faces south for sunrise and sunset views and overlooks White Mill Creek. It is partly covered for shade and partly open for enjoying the starry night skies. White Mill Creek is a heavily vegetated arroyo that is mostly dry except for during and after heavy rains. It creates a haven for desert wildlife, including birds, rabbits, mule deer, javelina, foxes, bobcats, and much more. The area around the house is landscaped with native plants and stone walkways. The area is very rugged, so enjoy the diverse terrain but watch your step.

Relax around the house, explore the property, or head out to Big Bend National Park, the river, or the Ghost Town. No Stock Ranch is the ideal home away from home. We’ll be pleased to have you as our guests.

TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.

Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.

People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.

The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)

FULL REFUNDS for all COVID-19 related cancellations. Regardless of any restrictions or timelines on our normal cancellation policies, we have been, and will continue to, issue 100% refunds or credits for any reservation that is either cancelled or rescheduled due to concerns, closures, or travel restrictions related to COVID-19 or any future pandemic of similar proportion. We request that guests provide us as much advance notice as possible. We also request that guests consider rescheduling instead of cancelling or consider accepting a credit for a future stay. We are all in this together. We want our guests to make the safety of themselves, their family and community, and our family and community their highest priority when making or revising travel plans. CLEANING & DISINFECTING: We have always prided ourselves in providing clean accommodations. That commitment is now more important than ever. For the safety of our guests and staff, we are temporarily imposing a minimum of a two-day vacancy between all stays. That extra time between stays is being used for extensive cleaning and disinfecting, including disinfecting all commonly touched surfaces and laundering all linens. Additionally, the time between stays allows ample time for the vast majority of viral particles to break-down even before our staff enters the property to begin cleaning. Due to shortages, we request that guests provide their own disinfectants and masks for their own use during their stays. Regardless of any actions taken by us, it is impossible to guarantee a risk-free environment. All guests assume personal responsibility for their own travel decisions and their own health.
