A room in Majanail ( a nocturnal moth: trans, lend me your home for a night ) available in a traditional, mayan style limestone home in a village 15 minutes from Chichen Itza. Hard wood timbers and palm thatch make a soaring arched ceiling.

Pladsen

This lodging and Dr. Colon's experience and training give you unprecedented access to the life of a living Mayan village. Once you cross the threshold you will begin to experience a way of life whose origins can be traced back to the beginning of humanity in the paleolithic era. This is a sustainable way of life that has been practiced for thousands of years and is missed by those whose experience of the Yucatan is confined to the packaged tours of the "zona hotelera".

Adgang for gæster

Guests, by prior arrangement, will have access to local cuisine prepared by the best cooks in this and a neighboring village, in their homes. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the mayan way of life from a seasoned anthropologist with an intimate knowledge of mayan culture.

Kontakt med gæster

I enjoy sharing my knowledge and engaging my guests according to the time they have available and the degree to which they want to delve into the fascinating culture of the maya.

José's house is right there in a Maya village, which is a perfect opportunity to learn about the life and culture there. The family was so nice and helpful, they offering help on dinner and taxi and all other stuff.

It was a delight to spend time with Jose. I have so much respect for his work, relationship to the community, in which he generously shared with me, and his kind hospitality. His place is very comfortably rustic and that is exactly the way I like it. The food was excellent, the bed comfortable and most importantly, the company was fantastic! Thank you Jose!

Very quiet village, off the beaten path. Better if you have your own vehicle. Knowledgeable host with very interesting insights on the history of the Maya. Overall a very good stay, learned a lot.

Jose is awesome. Incredibly Knowledgeable about Mayan life and happy to share. I stayed 4 nights and got to know the family that takes care of him. And why.... he and his Mayan family caretakers are terrific. And sweet and thoughtful. I totally enjoyed my my stay! I only Chose to go out once a day to a touristy type thing. But probably enjoyed my taxi-ing the family to the city flea market the best-partially became of the black Sabbath and the ramones tee shirts on display - and añd partially seeing how the mayans interact with the city kids (Mayan or not!). It was an educational stay that was comfortable enough! A hamock and a bed if sleep didn't come well enough, meals that the mother provides for a reasonable amount make eating easy, amen. Bathroom that was very clean even if the classic books were covered with a layer of dust-quaint for a retired profesor ! I was even talked I to going to chitzen Itzá. I'd still recommend ek balam over it... but hell. Go to both. And see some off the beaten track cenotes. They're worth it ! A highly recommended stop in the middle of the Yucatán!

We spent two nights at Jose's house and it's definitely one of the most memorable and unique experiences I've had on Airbnb. Jose is incredibly knowledgeable and kind. Him and his guests are welcomed by families all over the village. The first night we arrived we were invited for traditional dinner at a local family's house which was as authentic as it can get. For breakfast we were offered oatmeal with fresh fruit and it was one of the most delicious meals I've had in a while. Thank you, Jose! Would recommend to anyone looking to get an authentic experience of the culture.

His brilliant work on Mayan culture and rituals is groundbreaking and important in the world. We found it so fascinating. And thank you to Carlos for taking us to those Cenotes:) We can only highly recommend!

My name is Jose C. Colon. I am a retired anthropologist (Ph.D Stanford, 1981) who has lived and worked in Mexico, Central and South America. Most of my research has concentrated on the maya of the Yucatan and on the connections between their ancient and current beliefs and practices involving human procreation menstruation and the self-sacrifice of human blood. Two years ago I built my dream house a limestone structure with soaring, vaulted, palm thatch roof in the maya village, San Francisco, Tinum, where I have done my most fruitful research.

The sources of inspiration for the design are the architecture of the traditional maya home and the California Sierra Nevada mountain retreat (on the trail to the Palisade Glacier) of a star of the silver screen. I have used local materials; limestone, Guano Palm, hardwood timbers and modern appliances; inline gas water heater, convection oven and gravity fed water distribution for comfortable, safe and sanitary living in the rural tropics. In the garden I’ve planted native fruit trees and exotic hard and tone woods. The yard is a sanctuary for native and migratory birds and we encourage the growth of native plants that attract a wide variety of species. Early morning, especially during the rainy season (may-october) is filled with a veritable symphony of birdsong. Occasionally, they fly into the kitchen providing us with opportunities for close observation. We compost and cultivate summer herbs and vegetables to supplement the produce of the region.

I open my home to those who want to get off the beaten track in the north central yucatan, to enjoy easy access to daily life in a mayan village and who would like to learn from my 30+ years of research and experience in this fabulous corner of the world. My limestone home provides easy and regular access to Chichen Itza (15 min.), Valladolid (30 min.) and other points of interest in the Yucatan peninsula.
