I have lived in Bali for the last 5 years spending up to 6 months every year. Some years the ants are everywhere and sometimes not. In my experience, it has nothing to do with sanitary conditions, since the staff is very eager when cleaning. And every Balinese person knows that if they do not always clean thoroughly, soon there will be bugs everywhere and not just the nice ants who are doing their work. Regarding the frog and the Geckos. It is not possible to live in a tropical environment and expect these creatures to not visit from time to time. Contrary, the geckos keep the walls and ceiling free from mosquitos and other bugs constantly.
The bug spray I agree is not good and we try to reduce it as much as possible, but when the ants first decide to invade, the staff have a problem deciding, trying to get rid of the ants so they do not bother the guests and therefore use the spray, or just explain what happens (which is difficult to explain in poor English). Since the villa is newly established on Airbnb, the staff has not been enough instructed in what to do and feel confident enough to decide what to do.
We are truly sorry for Jo 's experience with the ants. We are glad she could enjoy the pool and the lovely neighbourhood during her stay.
