Bens is situated near the Spanish border where a bridge connects both countries and 16 KMs away from the historical town of Mertola. Beja's airport is 50 KM away and Faro's international airport in Algarve about 135 kms and Algarve's beaches at about 75 KMs (Monte Gordo) and Golf in Vilamoura very closed to Faro. The house has private outside parking. Bens is a very quiet little country village. Excellent to rest and hike in the countryside surrounded by an astonishing wild landscape and lakes where you may fishing or simply walk around amaizing the Nature wild life. Very close to a fluvial beach (pond) with rather warm water and also good for windsurf and canoeing; In Mertola there are old roman ruins, a castle and museums; the restaurants are recommended as the best in this area. A big and long river called Guadiana is just close by and one the best points to visit is waterfalls of "Pulo do Lobo" where you can take good and memorable pictures; If you like trekking you can see wild animals like rabbits, jumping and partridges, running or flying in front of you. In Pomarão, where the bridge crossing over to Spain is, river Guadiana becomes very wide and deep. Here you can also find a small marina. I like to be a good host and I have nice stories to tell you about my experiences when I was living in Africa and now in Europe since 1976.
Deve sempre fechar a porta a chave quando sair de casa. Desligar os aparelhos de ar condicionado e apagar as luzes sempre que sair, além de verificar que as torneiras de agua ficaram sem pingar.
Unfortunately we did not get a chance to meet our hosts as they had to go out of town last minute but they left the house in a welcoming condition with homemade marmalade and a few beers. View was nice, town was sleepy and unfortunately the only restaurant in town seems to have shut down which was the only downside to this place. The kitchen looked nice to cook on but we did not bring groceries.
Dear Liz, thank you for your comment. In our village we have one shop where can buy bread, milk, coffee, tea and other little groceries. In the Village nearby Santana de Cambas has two groceries and one restaurant. We really were very sorry have not been in the village to give you enough assistance for the reason formerly explained. The problem appointed by you it is now solved because we found an opened exhaust pipe of water waste tank that we did not know it was damaged. We are sorry and apologise for the inconvenience caused.
You will not get a better welcome from anyone. Alexandre and Maria are the kindest hosts. Maria had prepared a wonderful lunch which we ate it this perfect house in a fascinating village. With warm lakes to swim in, the beautiful small town and castle of Mertola nearby and the open blue sky of the Alentejo, it is one of the last unspoiled places of Europe. Forget the Algarve, this is the place to come !
un couple charmant et tres discret une maison plus que parfaite
un tres bon souvenir
Were enjoyed our stay in the Sunset House. Alexandre was very welcoming and accommodating and allowed us to add 2 days to our booking at the last minute. Alex and his wife were very kind and gave us cakes and strawberries from their garden. house is spacious, clean and comfortable. The town of Bens is very small and friendly. The local restaurant/bar is great, and Marcelo and Jose who run it are terrific. Marcelo speaks excellent English and we ate dinner there a number of times during our stay.
Thank you for your kind comments. Once more we had the luck to have so magnificent guests from the Australia. Lovely people who brought their experiences and feelings. Marcelo and Jose send their regards and thanks to be their clients at the Sociaty Restaurant of the village. Thank you and be happy with your little Georgia so beauty.
The Sunset House is lovely and has everything that you need for a restful holiday and the sunset is truly magical- looking out over the country-side. The location is in a tiny village and gives you a wonderful experience of Portuguese village life. We enjoyed exploring the local surroundings as well as the village itself. There is a small local cafe with such lovely hosts who welcomed us as well and made our experience in Bens truly special - thanks again to Marcelo and Jose.
And a wonderful thank you to Alexandre and his wife who made us feel so very welcome in the village. Communication was excellent and we found our way to the meeting point and Alexandre perfectly. They told us where we could eat and also buy local home-made cheese and they showed us around their lovely garden. We can thoroughly recommend Alexandre as an Airbnb host.
Alice, thank you so much for your appreciations and comments. My wife and I we were really lucky to know you and your husband. We apologise you not to be on the day of your departure by reasons of our visit to our doctors in Lisbon. We miss you and we wonder one day you'll come back again and spend more time together. God bless you.
We stayed in both of Alexander's houses in Bens. First the Sunset house for 5 days and then the Old House for the last 5 days. This was because the "old house" was already booked.
Both houses were comfortable and well equipped but the old house has a wonderful garden to sit in and enjoy the fragrances of the lemon blossoms and other flowers.
But what was really special was the sweetness of our hosts, Alexander and Eduarda, as well as others in the village. We ate dinner every evening at the restaurant ( no name ) for authentic Portuguese food made to order and incredibly inexpensive prepared by Jose with help from Marcelo. And then there is the cheese lady who makes fresh goats cheese every day.
Bens is a very quiet village and for us it was the perfect respite from Seville during the exstasis of Santa Semana. The countryside is beautiful with carpets of wild flowers at every turn.
We heartily recommend both of Alexander's houses and Bens itself. Peter and Janet, Connecticut, USA.

I was born in Mozambique. I'm living in Portugal since 1976. I'm retired from the Banco Santander-Totta of Lisbon. I like to read, write, paint , cook and gardening; My preferred writer is John Steinback; The preferred painters are Paul Gauguin and Chichorro. I'd like visit USA, Canada and UK. My preferred things are my books and my tools to do what I like. Sometimes when I am inspired I cook exotic meals. The most amazing thing that happened to me was when after some fishing lessons given to my grandson he caught a big fish which pulled the cane from his hands and I had to swim to recuperate the cane and the carp while the child was jumping of glad. I was glad also but completely wet with clothes and boots. I love to travel and I had two experiences together with my son in the north of Spain and west of France where we personaly stayed with two nice families as host inscribed in Airbnb. I love to make friends and stay in calm places and learn with the people what the best they have to teach. Now, I like to be host also and I have nice stories about my experiences in Africa and Europe. I visited some African and European Countries both in the north and south but I never was in UK. Finally I arrived from the U.K. to where I and my wife we had been for a fortnight and we visited London, Manchester, Salford and Bolton. We admired the organization, the education and the hospitality of the British people who receives and gives jobs to million of foreign people from diferent countries from the east to west and north to the south.
