Private Room with Queen Bed.
This spacious 1905 apartment building is directly across the street from the Ashby BART station in Berkeley, a 20min train ride to Downtown San Francisco, a 15min walk to Downtown Berkeley and 20min to UC Campus.
Our groovy apartment was described by some guests as 'A Very Berkeley Experience'. Whatever that means, come see for yourself, and stay in the comfort and luxury of an Edwardian era South Berkeley apartment. Very conveniently located across from the Ashby BART station (20 min to downtown SF, 15min walk to downtown Berkeley, 20min walk to campus). We live in one of the oldest apartment buildings in Berkeley, above an antique store. The room is large and private with a queen bed and french door sliding to the dining room. You're welcome to use our porch, kitchen / kitchen appliances + supplies and dining room.
We are a couple of artists & writers in our early 30s. We are also pretty low-key, Lauren mostly stays at her pottery studio and James sleeps in his office, so you get the quiet, dark master bedroom to yourself.
Our classy and eccentrically decorated apartment is often ooh'd and ahh'd over by friends and visitors, & you're invited to come stay here too!
Max 1 dog! Note: we have 2 cute pet female rats in a cage, so your dog must be under control & a non-barker.
Free Wifi, coffee maker and other kitchen supplies, lovely back porch.
We'll mostly stay out of your hair, but James is usually down for a beer if he's not working. Lots of local knowledge from living here for 9 years. Many board games on premises: Catan, Carcassonne, Takenoko, and more.
Our neighborhood has a park with lots of grass and tennis/ basketball courts just two blocks away, and a library branch. On weekends we have a big flea market across the street, and on Sundays the Thai Temple has an open air brunch one block over. Great local food/amenity stores: Berkeley Bowl Grocery, Crixa Cakes Bakery, Sconehenge Diner, La Familia Taqueria, Flaco's Taco's, Ashby Stage, The Starry Plough (Irish bar with live music), and a Walgreens amongst others.
BART station across the street, buses galore into SF and Alameda County.
PARKING: There is free street parking, sometimes you have to drive around for a minute to get a space, but it usually materializes.
If there are two guests, they must share the Queen bed.
Just don't break anything, and please do your own dishes.
James and Lauren have a beautiful little space in Berkeley, within walking distance to pretty much anything you might need during your stay. The room and bed were very comfortable, especially after a long afternoon of being out and about. They were so kind, respectful, and very helpful (I was looking for a place to live in the Bay Area, and Lauren pointed out where I may or may not want to look for housing - thank you!), and I enjoyed getting to meet their pet rats! They really give you free reign of the apartment - except their bedroom of course. I appreciate their eclectic decorating style, it made the place feel like a home. I would recommend this place for anyone looking to stay in the Berkeley area.
A perfect location, very easy to go everywhere. A nice large supermarket nearby. Clean and quiet room in a very artistic apartment!
James and his sweet lady Lauren were a wonderful pair to share space with. [This was my first use of AirBnB, and they definitely made my husband and I future users of this wonderful network of rentable spaces.] We arrived late in the evening, and Lauren was there to give us the grand tour. Their apartment is bohemian cozy chic and very welcoming. I have difficulty falling asleep in new places at times, and I zonked right out. The vibe was perfect. They offered us tea and all the information we needed about the area, and we even had some treats waiting for us upon arrival. Communication was easy via email, and they were there to pick up my phone calls when necessary. Oh, and their fur babies (two adorable rats names Doggie and Blakey) are adorable. If you are not into pet rats, they also offered to keep them locked up in their cage, but we loved them. Wonderful place, wonderful people, and way close to public transportation and BART. We will definitely look to stay here when we return to Berkeley.
Lauren and James were very friendly, their appartment very closed to BART.
This was our first experience of AirBnB. The arrangements with James to stay were straightforward and he was there when we arrived. The accommodation is as described and was comfortable and quiet. We were made to feel at home. The house is convenient for BART and a short walk to an excellent Supermarket. Lauren and James were friendly and helpful and we would be happy to stay again.
Location is convenient to BART. James was responsive and easy to coordinate with. He and Lauren both seemed very friendly and easy going. In the end, I did not stay overnight as I decided to stay with friends instead, so I can not fairly give a rating or a more full review. One thing that I did not realize (though it is in the description) is that James and Lauren have pet rats that are in an open cage. Since James & Lauren seemed very friendly and eager to make me comfortable, if I had stayed overnight, they might have been willing to close the cage during the night if asked. But just something to note.
To clarify, our rats are in a cage that can/ will be easily closed above an armoire in the living room. We do leave their door open most times as they can roam around on top of the armoire, for exercise but they never come down unless we physically get them. They do not have free roam of the house. We are more than happy to keep the cage closed at all times during your stay.
Staying here blew away all my expectations. Certainly, the place provides a panoply of creature comforts, such as a full kitchen, laundry, patio, and a personal 'chaise longue' (as well as across-the-street BART and Berkeley Bowl access). But what really made my stay here memorable was my interaction with the hosts, James and Lauren. They are Berkleyites through and through. This is a good thing. By talking with them, any tourist or foreigner can develop a deep and meaningful understanding of what it means to live in Berkeley. Highly recommended--an invaluable experience.
We are a couple of artists & musicians paying our rent as waiters. We are in our early 30s. We are social, stay up until about midnight (although we're pretty quiet after 10), smoke outside, & drink alcohol regularly. We are also pretty low-key, and the place is peaceful. Our classy apartment is often ooh'd and ahh'd over by friends and visitors, & you're invited to come stay here too!
