Christine booked a month in advance for 12 nights but sent us an alteration request to change to 1 day, on the day of check-in. Upon us not accepting super last minute alteration (within host rights), she canceled after one night (within her rights). There was a confusion between what cancellation policy would apply because the time she booked (months ago) we had flexible policy and when she canceled we had moderate policy. Anyhow, she got refunded the amount per flexible cancellation policy. Which I feel was a great outcome for both the guest and the host. Had she not gotten her refund (since we weren't sure of the policy that'll apply), we also promised to refund her fully after the rebooking on open dates occurs (resolutions are open for 60 days after hosting). Despite all of that she left us scathing, pinching messages in the inbox, not adhering to Airbnb content policy. Days after her leaving as well. Not sure why a guest will go to such lengths to disturb the host. Such confrontation is unheard of in Airbnb community where all my experience since hosting close to 100 guests on multiple listings has been smooth so far. Guests should respect the fact that both hosts and guests are a part of Airbnb community and especially that the hosts open their own homes to the guests. Share their living space with them and that should mean respect both ways. Anyone in my place as a host will feel disappointed on losing a reservation so last minute and upon that if the guest tries to do it in a manner that Christine did, sending an alteration (and not canceling up front), one's bound to believe that they were doing so to prevent having to pay cancellation charges. Even after all that and getting their money, if the guest furthers the conversation into a unhealthy back and forth, it really makes the host lose faith in airbnb community. No one's here to pick fights :)
